Welcome back hockey fans. Thursday night brings us nine games with no one playing a back to back and just two teams(NSH, VAN) playing a third game in four nights. Let’s dig in and take a look at some of the top plays at each position.
Top Goalie Target
Pekka Rinne(DK - $7,900 FD - $9,200)
First of all, I wouldn’t talk you out of rostering Devan Dubnyk tonight who is a huge -230 favorite at home. I will be going a different direction, at least on DraftKings, and loading up on Pekka Rinne who has been one of the best goalie’s in the league this season. He is second overall in GAA(1.47), save %(.951), and shutouts(2) and faces a Coyotes team that has lost four of their last five games and rank 28th in offense(2.65 per game) this season. All things considered, Rinne is in play in all formats, especially on DraftKings where he falls in the sub $8K range.
Also Consider: Devan Dubnyk(MIN)
John Tavares(DK - $7,800 FD - $8,600)
The offseason signing of John Tavares is paying off in a big way for the Leafs. He has been solid all season but has carried the team with points in seven of eight games since Auston Matthews went down with a shoulder injury. He is not only a high upside play as he has provided a very high floor for cash games averaging 3.9 shots on goal per game backed up by a 18.6 iCrosi/60 rating. On paper, the matchup may not stand out as the islanders travel to San Jose but Johnny T has been much better on the road as he has tallied 16 of his 22 points away from Toronto. Fire up Tavares in all formats and find value elsewhere.
Nolan Patrick(DK - $4,400 FD - $5,300)
To fit Tavares or another star player in your lineup tonight we will have to find some value and at center that player is Nolan Patrick for me tonight. While he doesn’t provide much shot volume, he gets a ton of opportunity centering the second line and powerplay unit for the Flyers and has already tallied nine points in 15 games in his sophomore season. The matchup also stands out as the Flyers are at home against a Devils team that has not only lost six of their last eight games but also ranks 30th in road defense allowing 4.88 goals per game.
Also Consider: Aleksander Barkov(FLA)
Andreas Athanasiou(DK - $6,900 FD - $4,800)
The Red Wings have been cruising lately winning four straight and seven of their last eight games and in large part to the production that Athanasiou has provided. He comes into tonight with three straight multi point games and has 11 points in his last 10 games and on top of the upside he has also provided a high floor averaging 3.6 shots on goal. The Red Wings are on the road tonight but it is hard to argue with the matchup as the Sens sit dead last overall allowing 4.22 goal per game. On DraftKings, the decision is a lot tougher as his price has come up but on FanDuel, Athanasiou is a near lock in the sub $5K range.
Colton Sissons(DK - $4,000 FD - $3,400)
The theme of this article has become stars and scrubs and instead of mentioning more stars(Hall, Forsberg, Kucherov) I will give you another value play to tie it all together. With Viktor Arvidsson on IR, Colton Sissons has stepped up to the top line with Johansen and Forsberg and while the upside is somewhat limited, the opportunity is there. He has also provided a stable floor(for the price) with three or more shots on goal in five straight games. In cash games, I love pairing Sissons with Forsberg and for GPP’s I will be adding Johansen to complete the line stack tonight.
Also Consider: Evander Kane(SJ)
Mark Giordano(DK - $5,600 FD - $5,600)
With all the value on this slate, I will be spending up a bit for defense. What surprised me the most when first looking at the position was the mid $5K range price for Giordano on both sites considering there are only four other D-men who area averaging more fantasy points per game this season. He checks all the boxes averaging 3.2 shots/1.8 blocks per game for a high floor and he also big upside with 16 points in 18 games this season. Fire up Giordano in all formats.
