Daily Fantasy Baseball Core Plays for DraftKings and FanDuel - 4/20/19(Early Slate)

With two double-headers going on due to rain on Friday, we have a jam-packed Saturday of baseball. As of now neither of the game two’s are listed on a slate on either site but there are some completely differet slate setups. For this article, I will be looking at my core plays for the eight games listed on the early slate on DraftKings.

With that, let’s jump into the picks.

Starting Pitcher

Jameson Taillon(PIT)

Weather on Friday has made a bit of a mess of things on Saturday but as of right now Taillon is slated to start for the Pirates and is my top option on the early slate. He is 0-2 on the season that doesn’t exactly tell the story as he allowed four earned runs in his first start but just four combined in his last three starts. He has yet to tap into that K upside but the control is there as he has also only walked three in the last three starts and sits with a walk rate just over two per nine over since the start of last season.

What stands out the most today is the matchup as the Pirates are currently -160 home favorites against a Giants team ranks 26th in runs scored(62), 29th in wRC+(59), 30th in wOBA(.260), and strike out 25% of the time. If the weather is a go, Taillon is a great play in all formats.

Also Consider: Jose Berrios(MIN)

First Base/Catcher

Luke Voit(NYY)

The Yankees have been hit hard by injuries and have slumped a bit lately but are coming alive as I write this with five runs going into the 7th inning. The injuries have also opened up more playing time for Luke Voit who shared some of the first base duties with Greg Bird(10-day IL). While he hasn’t yet flashed the huge upside who all know he possesses, he has been consistently getting on base with hits in six straight and 12 of is last 13 games and he does have three home runs in that time.

The matchup is also attractive against Heath Fillmyer who has already given up eight earned runs in his first two starts and an average exit velocity of 93 mph with a 48.4% hard contact rate. This is a graet spot for the Yankees offense and Voit is situated right in the middle of the order and is setup for a big day.

Also Consider: Josh Bell(PIT)

Second Base

Robinson Cano(NYM)

I will be looking to second base for value tonight and it feels like a bit of a buy-low for an All Star caliber player in Robinson Cano. I get that he has struggled early in the year but he has a long track record of consistency and even after his 80-game PED suspension last year he came back and hit .317 with a low 13% K rate over 41 games. More good news as he is currently 3 for 3 as I write this and considering the options today, he is a great play in all formats especially on FanDuel in the sub $3K range.

Also Consider: Tyler Wade(NYY) as a punt

Third Base

Matt Chapman(OAK)

Chapman is a player I consider at the position on almost any slate due to his consistency. He is coming off an impressive first full season where he slashed .278/.356/.508 with 24 home runs and 100 runs scored and has picked up right where he left off. His slash line(.284/.361/.581) is nearly identical and he already has six home runs on the season and from a safety perspective, is only striking out 9% of the time. Oakland has the third-highest implied runs on the early slate goign up against Matt Shoemaker who has over performed looking at his ERA(1.75) and xFIP(4.22) while giving up 40% hard contact. He is in play in all formats on both sites but his best value comes on DraftKings where he is the 4th most expensive option at the position.

Also Consider: Matt Carpenter(STL)

Jorge Polanco(MIN)

Yesterday’s game was rained out and there is rain in the forecast on Saturday but they should at least get one game in today. That is good news as Jorge Polanco is in a great spot today. He has been red-hot to start the season slashing .400/.464/.717 on a new look Twins team. e doesn’t provide a ton of upside most days but the opportunities should be there today as the Twins will go up against Dan Straily in game one today. After allowing 10 earned runs in his first two starts, he rebounded allowing just one in Boston but has only strcuk out two batters all season and has allowed a 90+ mph exit velocity and 54% hard contact rate. Provided this is game one and they have all day/night to play this out, I will even consider Polanco and other Twins in cash games.

Also Consider: Tim Anderson(CWS)

Nick Castellanos(DET)

The Tigers are one of the teams that really stand out on this early slate as they get an elite matchup. They face Ervin Santana who is coming off a shortened season(5 starts) where he posted an 8.30 ERA/6.68 xFIP and that has carried over into 2019 as he has already given up 10 earned runs through two starts while giving up five long balls.

For Castellanos, he went into Friday night’s action red-hot with hits in six of his last seven games with six doubles. While he is looking for his first home run of the season he has been consistent hitting .278 overall while getting on base at a .338 clip. While I don’t usually mention BvP in my articles, it is hard to ignore the 9 for 21 for Casty against Santana. All things considered, Castellanos is a great play in all formats.

Also Consider: David Peralta(ARI)
