Daily Fantasy Baseball Core Plays for DraftKings and FanDuel - 5/16/19

Welcome back to another getaway Thursday in baseball. The day starts with an early four-game slate but in this article I will be looking at my top pitcher and tams to stack for the five-game main slate. Let’s get started.

With that, let’s jump into the picks.

Luis Castillo(DK - $10,600 FD - $10,300)

It feels like a gift that DraftKings and FanDuel have added this 6:40 pm game to the main slate as the other pitching options are nothing to write home about. The matchup is definitely not the best against a Top 10 Cubs offense but Castillo has taken a step up into the elite class of pitching early in the season. Outside of the one start where he gave up four earned runs to the Giants, he has been brilliant holding opponents to two or fewer earned runs in each of his other eight starts. He is still having issues with walks(10.9%) but more than makes up for it with his elite 59% groundball rate, career-high 31.8% K rate, and ridiculous 15.7% swinging strike rate. All things considered, Castillo is my top pitcher in all formats tonight.

Also Consider: Marcus Stroman(TOR)

Teams to Target

St. Louis Cardinals @ Atlanta Braves

With rain highly likely in the late game(MIN@SEA) we are reduced to a four-game slate and this Cards/Braves game is one I will consider both sides in cash games and game stack in GPP formats. The Cardinals have been the hotter team as of late and go up against an inconsistent Julio Teheran who sits with a 4.26 ERA/4.49 xFIP and has given up three or more earned runs in five of his nine starts. His biggest struggles are against left-handed bats so for cash games I will be loading up on Matt Carpenter who hits leadoff and Kolten Wong at second despite hitting down in the order as the position is very tough to fill tonight.

The Braves have been a Top 10 offense all season and while they are slightly better against southpaws they get a plus matchup today. Wainwright isn’t someone we are going to stack against every time out but it is a small slate and he has given up at least one home run in four straight and five of his last six starts(18.9% HR/FB rate on the season). Just like Teheran, he really struggles against lefties giving up a .406 wOBA/.627 SLG so for cash games I am looking directly at Freddie Freeman and Nick Markakis.

Top Cash Game Options: Matt Carpenter/Kolten Wong(STL), Freddie Freeman/Nick Markakis(ATL)

Add for a GPP Stack: Paul Goldschmidt/Paul DeJong/Marcell Ozuna(STL), Ronald Acuna/Josh Donaldson/Brian McCann(ATL)

Toronto Blue Jays vs. Dylan Covey(CWS)

The Jays are a team in full rebuild mode but on this smaller slate present some value in a plus matchup. The face a pitcher in Dylan Covery who has gone back and forth between the minors and majors for three straight seasons and just hasn’t been able to put it all together. Over his first two starts this season, he has allowed eight earned runs while striking out just five and walking 10 batters.

While the Jays have struggled to score runs all season, the good news is that they are slightly better against righties. That is especially noticeable with young, up and coming star Vladdy Jr. as he comes into tonight with a .378 wOBA, 139 wRC+, and 48% hard contact rate in the split. Unless there are no other options when lineups are released, I will be using the Jays in GPP formats only.

GPP Stack: Eric Sogard(2B), Vladimir Guerrero Jr.(3B), Justin Smoak(1B), Randal Grichuk(OF)
